KtMac Reviews: I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced

The good: A heart-breaking behind-the-scenes look at the story of the Yemeni girl who demanded and won a divorce at the age of ten a few years ago.  The story is told by Nujood, in her voice and her understanding of the events.

The bad: I felt, especially as a wizened adult, so strongly all the the pain and suffering poor Nujood went through.  You will need a kleenex or two.  This book reaffirms my strong beliefs that it is our responsibility as adults to ensure every child has a happy childhood for as long as possible.  I also suspect that the book was written for a young adult audience even though it was shelved on the adult new non-fiction shelves.

The verdict: Read it.  It's a quick read.  It will break your heart.  It will reaffirm the fact that life in Yemen is like life everywhere else.  There are good people and there are bad people and there are good people in bad circumstances and it is up to you to make your life.
